Re-take Policy

Version 2.05 · Published 18 August 2026

This policy is delivered in line with the Railway Industry Standard 3751 TOM. Railway Competence Group as members of the Railway Assessment Forum adhere to this method of assessment and may amend the policy as per changes to the RIS 3751 TOM or upon consultation with the RACF.

In line with RIS 3751 TOM, Railway Competence Group will adhere to the following outlined within the standard:

2.7 Re-assessments for failed candidates

2.7.1 Railway undertakings shall not re-assess a candidate who has failed the

psychometric assessment process within six months.

2.7.2 Railway undertakings shall not re-assess a candidate who has failed the

psychometric assessment process more than once unless there are mitigating

circumstances that have been considered and documented by the railway undertaking.

When a candidate is re-assessed, the process needs to cover only the elements which the candidate failed at the first assessment, if:

  1. It is carried out within five years of the first assessment.

  2. There is no evidence of a major life event having occurred since the first assessment, for examples see Appendix C of this document.

Any candidate who failed a previous version of the psychometric assessment process is considered by the industry Driver Selection Governance Group to be eligible to be assessed up to twice using the process outlined in Appendix A.1[1]

As Railway Competence Group deliver testing for Train/Freight operators and/or individual private candidates. Railway Competence Group will adhere to the wishes of the customer as to whether part assessments or full assessments are required.

Railway Competence Group will ensure the customer is aware that any part tests will have a validity of five years from the first assessment date, as above. Medical fitness for the role is the responsibility of the recruiting operator as per Train Driver Licensing requirements.

To avoid candidates re-sitting the assessments within 6 months of a previous attempt, or candidates sitting the assessments having failed more than once before. Railway Competence Group assessors will review the RACF database prior to assessments taking place. The database check will be logged on the overall marking sheet and the candidate details questionnaire. Following completion of the tests, Railway Competence Group assessors will upload the test results/candidate details to the RACF database within 7 days of the assessment taking place. Only assessments applicable to the Railway Industry Standard 3751 TOM will be uploaded to the database. Entries from other centres not applicable to RIS 3751 TOM will not be uploaded.

Due to updates to the standard coming into force on 07/12/24. The following applies for candidates who start the process post the 07/12/24:

  • Following an unsuccessful first attempt, the candidate must wait a minimum of 12 month for a resit.

  • The second attempt can be sat as a part assessment.

  • If the second attempt is a fail the candidate may have a third attempt but this must be minimum of 5 years post their first attempt and the full process must be completed.

Both processes are currently running concurrently and the checks/mitigations conducted by RCG remain the same.
