Independent assessment of occupational competence
Apprenticeship Assessment, formerly known as End-Point Assessment (EPA), is the formal, independent assessment of an apprentice's occupational competence.

Apprenticeship assessment
What is an Apprenticeship Assessment?
An Apprenticeship Assessment is the formal assessment undertaken as part of an apprenticeship to determine whether an apprentice has developed the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for their occupation.
Previously referred to as End-Point Assessment (EPA), it provides independent assurance that an apprentice can demonstrate the competence required by their apprenticeship standard. It is carried out by an organisation that has had no part in training the apprentice, so the judgement rests solely on the evidence presented at assessment.
Every apprenticeship standard sets out the assessment methods that must be used, how each one is weighted and the criteria for a pass, merit or distinction. Assessment normally takes place after gateway, once the employer and training provider agree the apprentice is ready and any mandatory qualifications, English and maths requirements have been met.
For the railway, that usually means assessment has to work around shifts, depots, possessions and safety-critical rules. We plan assessment windows with the employer and provider, brief apprentices clearly on what to expect, agree reasonable adjustments in advance, and return graded outcomes and certification promptly so progression is not held up.
