About the apprenticeship
What is the Rail Foundation Apprenticeship?
Foundation apprenticeships are employed positions for younger people who will benefit from a wide range of experiences. Each one provides a mix of employability skills and behaviours, technical knowledge and skills, and associated English and maths, combining hands-on practice in the workplace with off-the-job learning.
Rail foundation apprentices gain hands-on experience across a variety of railway environments, including stations, depots, control and signalling centres, offices and other operational sites. The broad purpose of the role is to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the railway, helping to ensure customers and goods reach their destinations safely and on time.
Typical progression routes include employment or moving onto a level 2 or level 3 apprenticeship, such as Train Driver or Passenger Transport Operative.
